Saturday 10th April saw the SA/NT branch of the Australian Irish Dancing Association host it’s first ever “Showcase” event. The concert celebrated Irish dancing in South Australia. Most importantly, it provided a non competitive setting for the schools to come together and demonstrate their skills. The event took place at Westminster College and offered dancers a chance to perform in a show-style event.
Our 2020 State Champions opened the event with the traditional “Parade of Champions”. It was fantastic to celebrate their achievement after Covid restrictions stopped it from being included in the Championships last year. Each Champion was recognised during the parade, getting a chance to show off a step. Our own Alex had the chance to participate after winning her first State title last year.
After that, each school put on a short performance. Each school bought their own style and flare to the day. Styles ranged from a traditional brush dance to modern show pieces. Even our Darwin friends from the Tara Academy were involved “long distance”, with their video performance included in the show.
The Roberts Academy chose a medley of our favourite performance pieces. Our team ranged from 6 – 36 years and included all levels from Beginner to Open. All the dancers did an amazing job and gave a strong performance. Special mention has to go to our two beginners though. They had a blast and did so well dealing with the big stage and bright lights! The Showcase ended with a fun finale involving every dancer joining together to perform the “Jerusalema” dance.
Although it was a long day, everyone pulled together to help each other and had a great time. Thankyou to AIDA SA/NT for organising such a great event. Hopefully we can see you all again for another Showcase in 2022!!
